Business Casual Wardrobe Essentials for Women

Confused by the term “business casual”? You’re not alone! I’m here to help you decode this style of dress for the workplace.

For many women, the evolution toward business casual dressing meant we could wear pant suits instead of skirt suits. Then, (Hallelujah!) we were able to ditch the hosiery.

What is Business Casual?

Business Casual or “smart casual” can differ according to the type of firm, company culture or geographic location. A corporate law firm might define the term as no tie for men and no formal suit for women. For a more casual workplace, this might mean company logo polos and khaki pants. However, when in doubt, lean towards business professional vs. casual.

Business Casual Dress Code Do’s & Don’ts 

Do:

If this is a new job, ask the HR Director or look to your boss for guidance.

Err on the conservative side. It’s always better to be more professionally dressed, if you’re unsure.

Look for:

• Tailored pants
• If jeans are OK for your workplace, choose a dark wash with no fraying
• Knee length or midi skirts
• Closed toe shoes 
• Conservative blouses or tops (think neutral colors and patterns)
• Layering pieces such as a cardigan or versatile jacket. Inside office temperatures and outside may vary greatly.
• Keep it simple! Build a capsule wardrobe around these items and you won’t need to stress out each morning deciding what to wear
• Find what’s comfortable for you. This means a good fit, something that exudes confidence when you wear it. Opt for unfussy and easy to care for clothing.
• Once you find the perfect core piece, buy it in different colors if possible.

Don’t:

In a business casual setting, avoid these items:

• Trendy or fast fashion items — Save those for dinner and drinks with your gal-pals
• Ill-fitting clothing (too tight or too baggy)
• Revealing clothing (low rise pants, low cut blouses)
• Athletic Wear
• Capri pants. In warmer weather, opt for an ankle pant instead.
• Shorts. In some environments, it may be OK to wear a knee length tailored short that can be worn with a jacket or button-down shirt.
